I am not sure. I think of it as a layered process. One layer is the substance and above it comes the style and the structure and the narrative. And yes, now that you pointed out, substance can be similar across an author’s multiple books. But I do not agree with the reader being involve in the construction of the lens. Interpretation, sure. But lens is constructed by the author. Because I think apart from the stories, we are more obsessed with the idea of storytelling. It is this style that brings out different perspectives, different ways of telling a story, when the actual substance differs so little across books, not just for a particular author, but for the literary world in general.
